The former mining town of Schladming, in Austria, dates all the way back to the Middle Ages. The old city walls will and the way the town centre is built will tell the stories. Nowadays, it is a modern ski resort where everyone in the town takes skiing very seriously, which is why they organised the world championship Alpine skiing in this town. Schladming is situated in the “Ennstal” valley and surrounded by lush green forrest slopes, at the foot of the Planai and also surrounded by 8 other mountains of the Schladming- Dachstein ski region. It is smack in the middle of the whole region. There is no need to get bored at all in this car-free village. Enjoy the town and its surroundings from a hot air balloon, or go on a hike in while the sun sets, with torches, for instance.
The town also has a gym with indoor tennis and squash courts that you can rent, a public pool and not to forget it has some nice quaint shops, for those that enjoy shopping more than working out. There are over 30 restaurants in the centre and plenty of bars to indulge in your “apres-ski” wishes. One of the biggest apres-ski bars in Europe is Hohenhaus Tenne and is definitely worth a visit!
Schladming is part of the bigger ski area of Schladming – Dachstein, which is part of the ski region Ski Amadé in Austria. The ski area of Schladmning – Dachstein boasts approximately 232km of pistes for both the beginner and the advanced skiers. The highest point in this area is 2700 meters. For those who want to try cross-country skiing, there is also 230 km of tracks that can be explored in this area.
